Digital Short #2 “MISSED CALL” – Work in Progress

Artist Shounak Jog (India Authentic, Vargav) has picked up the script for Digital Short #2 MISSED CALL and sent in some WIP thumbs when I was away at SDCC.

Shounak has a great flowing style that I admire a lot (He did awesome work for India Authentic : GARUDA issue) and I, for one, am waiting eagerly to see what he does with the script. If the rough WIP thumbs below are any indication, we’re in for a visual treat. 🙂

Enjoy these while we wait for Shounak to finish the short, after which it shall be posted here. Meanwhile you can enjoy Sid Kotian’s work on Digital Short #1 REMASTER.

About Mumbai Confidential Digital Shorts

MUMBAI CONFIDENTIAL Digital Shorts are a series of companion comics to the first book “GOOD COP, BAD COP” by various artists using the characters created by Saurav Mohapatra and Vivek Shinde. These shorts are set in the same “universe” as the main story. Though these are not required to follow the main book, they do enhance the backstory of GOOD COP, BAD COP.

First Digital Short is now online

As has been mentioned before, there’s a series of digital short comics set in the Mumbai Confidential universe. So the first of these shorts called “REMASTER” (art by Siddharth Kotian) is now online.

Digital Shorts on iPad test drive

So we spoke about the Digital Shorts last time around and that they were designed to be viewed on devices like iPad, Kindle etc. So today we test drove the Digital Short #1 “REMASTER” (art by Sid Kotian) on the iPad.

As you can see, we chose the so-called “Zuda Format” for the digital shorts, because it is better for viewing on a digital reader (iPad, Kindle etc.)

And, even if I must say it myself, the results look damn freakin’ cool :).

Who likes short shorts? :)

Things are sort of humming on the art front after a lull and Vivek is busy churning out story pages. We always envisioned Mumbai Confidential as a universe rather than just one book (something like Ed Brubaker’s CRIMINAL or Frank Miller’s SIN CITY). So apart from the main book “GOOD COP, BAD COP”, there will be a series of digital shorts about characters, events outside of the book’s scope. Reading these shorts isn’t mandatory to enjoy the book, but they do enhance the backstory.

First digital short is pencilled, inked, lettered and ready. We’ll be releasing it soon on the website. The art is by Sid Kotian (DEVI, EAT THE DEAD, RAMAYAN RELOADED, THE STRANDED). So keep your eyes peeled for that. The shorts will also be available for other digital readers like iPhone, iPad and Kindle.

Ah, and before I forget — a new one sheeter for MC.

Change in team

Unfortunately Sid Kotian has left the art team due to some personal engagements, but fikar nawt folks, artist Vivek Shinde (PROJECT: KALKI, SNAKEWOMAN, SPECIAL OFFICER SAWANT) has stepped in as my collaborator on Mumbai Confidential.

Vivek has already turned in some explorations which I’ll be posting soon-ish and I must say his take on the characters is really really kick-ass.

Art Dump – 2

When I developed the concept of Mumbai Confidential three years back (This was before Vivek came on board) the most awesome Sid Kotian did some explorations of the concept. Sid signed off the project due to personal reasons/time constraints. Vivek came on board and redid the art from scratch in his own style. This post contains some of Sid’s earlier designs. Maintained here for archival’s sake. 🙂

Here are the inked pages for pages 1 and 2. Sid is not happy with Page 2 (Well looks more than okay to me 🙂 ), but anyways you be the judge.

Here is an art dump of the thumbnails of the first sequence and character concept for Sawant, the bad guy. Sid has done a good job in translating my jumbled notes into a real visual treat. The opening sequence is a shootout between Sawant and Kadam in Dharavi. It’s night and monsoons are lashing Mumabai 🙂 Our two dudes are at it shooting each other… why you ask? 😛 well check out the book when it comes out.
